A 4.2 magnitude earthquake struck Uttarakhand's Uttarkashi district on Saturday night (October 10, 2026), sending strong tremors across the Uttarkashi town and the Yamunotri valley.
According to the National Centre for Seismology, the earthquake, measuring 4.2, struck at 8.07 p.m., with its epicentre located two km northwest of Uttarkashi at a depth of 11 km.
Purushottam Uniyal, a priest from Kharsali village, the winter seat of Yamunotri, said the tremors were strong enough to cause televisions inside homes to shake. The sudden and intense tremors triggered panic, prompting people to rush outdoors, he said.
Saturday's earthquake was the second tremor measuring above 4.0 on to hit Uttarakhand in four days. A 4.9-magnitude earthquake had struck Chamoli district on October 6.
Officials of the Uttarakhand State Disaster Management Authority (USDMA) said no damage had been reported so far.
