Gautam Adani, Chairman of Adani Group, on Thursday (September 24, 2026) inaugurated a 2000-bed hospital in Kolkata and announced an investment roadmap of over ₹1 lakh crore in West Bengal by 2035 in presence of Chief MinisterSuvendu Adhikari.

Mr. Adani said that the investment of ₹1 lakh will span sectors spanning ports, logistics, renewable energy, power generation, power transmission and distribution, roads and bridges, green cement and hyperscale data centres.

The announcement marks the first formal mention of the Adani Group’s proposal to invest in power distribution in West Bengal.

So far, power distribution has remained the monopoly of the R.P. Sanjiv Goenka Group, through its flagship company CESC Ltd, in Kolkata and Howrah.

Emphasising that Bengal can serve as the country’s natural maritime and logistics bridge to Northeast India and Southeast Asia, Mr. Adani said the state has the potential to become “one of Asia’s greatest integrated industrial and economic platforms”.

He described Mundra Port in Gujarat as the group’s first ‘karmabhoomi’ and expressed hope that West Bengal would become its second ‘karmabhoomi’. This was the first visit of Gautam Adani, after the Bharatiya Janata Party government in West Bengal.

Adani Arogya Mandir, the health facility whose foundation stone was laid on September 24, is a 2,000-bed hospital, spread across 51.75 acres and according to its promoters the facility will cater to over 200,000 inpatients and over 2 million outpatients annually.

“At the heart of this institution [Adani Arogya mandir] will be a medical college supported by advanced research and care facilities. This will lay the foundations for a highly skilled health care workforce for Bengal. We will invest over Rs 4,000 crore in this hospital, college, and research facility. This institution is expected to generate over 10,000 jobs across the healthcare ecosystem of the state,” Mr. Adani said.

Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, while criticising the previous Trinamool Congress government of being only interested in appeasement and dole politics, said that he looks forward to the support of Mr. Adani to rebuild Bengal. “The final vision is not just a hospital campus; it will be a fully integrated healthcare city. Nowhere in India is there a hospital of this high standard. The hospital will give a big boost to medical tourism,” Mr. Adhikari said.

Earlier this week, the Chief Minister met Reliance Industries chairman Mukesh Ambani at his residence and expressed hope that Reliance Group will invest in the State. The BJP government in West Bengal is trying to hard-sell the State as an investment destination.
