“Tonight, I’m gonna have myself a real good time. . .” go the lyrics of ‘Don’t Stop Me Now’ by Queen. “Basically, that underlines what our performers are trying to say with this concert: we are on a ride showcasing, showing off, singing, and enjoying ourselves with this performance,” says Maya Mascarenhas, founder and director of The Bangalore Children’s Chorus.
Directed by Maya and Judith Roby Bidapa, Don’t Stop Me Now will span a wide range of musical genres including jazz, rock, pop and classical music. And in keeping with every performance by the Bangalore Children’s Chorus, the procceds from this show too, will go towards supporting children in need.
According to Maya, the Bangalore Children’s Chorus presents a show every few months. “However, with Don’t Stop Me Now we have tried a different format. We are a 130-strong group comprising 110 children and 20 adults, so this time instead of involving everyone, we have split them in two.”
Though everyone in the group is involved with every production, Maya felt choosing a smaller group this time would give all the members a chance to try out a different role. “Instead of featuring everyone and giving them all a few lines each, this time round, the production will see the efforts of a fewer members playing a bigger role.”
To this end, the Bangalore Children’s Chorus will perform at Sabha, a compact space with limited seating, she says. While Don’t Stop Me Now, will see senior members of the Chorus performing, Maya says the juniors will get their turn under the stagelights at an upcoming show in November.

“This is the first in the series of smaller shows planned for this year, and we are all quite excited to present this new format. We particularly didn’t want to compromise on the quality of our presentation.”
“Our original objective was to identify those with similar talents and give them an opportunity to perform in public. At the same time, we wanted to help them hone their skills in singing, musical theatre, choreography and other areas. Above all, our philosophy has always been ‘children for children’, and that is why any money raised goes to organisations supporting vulnerable children.”
And though this concert will present a mixed bag of genres, including Latin American jazz tunes, rock and pop, that will not only showcase the children’s vocal prowess but also have audiences swaying to the music, Maya says certain classical segments of the evening will require a quieter, reflective approach.
Don’t Stop Me Now by the Bangalore Children’s Chorus will be presented at Sabha on September 5 and September 6, at 4:30pm and 7:30pm on both days. For tickets priced at ₹750 contact 9886045557
