More than 1,000 people participated in Bengaluru’s first completely plastic-free Climate Action Walk & Run 2026 on Sunday, with organisers showcasing how large public events can be conducted without single-use plastic while promoting climate action and sustainable living.

The event, organised to mark World Environment Day in line with the United Nations Environment Programme’s global campaign, was jointly hosted by Hasirotsava Forum, Suraksha Enviro Solutions and the Karnataka Jesuit Province Environmental Commission.

Addressing participants, Vijayalakshmi, Senior Environmental Officer, Karnataka State Pollution Control Board, said tackling climate change requires active public participation alongside government initiatives.

She called for reducing plastic consumption, adopting scientific waste management practices and embracing environmentally responsible lifestyles.

Refreshments were served in reusable steel utensils, drinking water was provided in biodegradable cups, and no event T-shirts were distributed to avoid apparel waste. Instead, each participant received a sapling. Race bibs, wristbands and hydration cups were made from seed paper that can be planted after use.

Participants, including school and college students, environmental enthusiasts, professional runners, and senior citizens, took part in the event. One of the highlights was the participation of people across all age groups, from a four-year-old child to a 95-year-old senior citizen.
