CMRL-Exalogic pay-off case: Kerala Police issue formal orders appointing SIT

The investigators face the challenge of independently verifying the material provided by the ED and gathering corroborating evidence.

The Kerala Police have issued formal orders appointing a Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by Crime Branch Superintendent of Police (SP) P. Vikraman to inquire into corruption allegations against Leader of the Opposition Pinarayi Vijayan, his daughter T. Veena, former Minister P.A. Mohamed Riyas and his associates in the CMRL-Exalogic pay-off case.

Supervised by the Additional Director General of Police (ADGP), Crime Branch, the SIT will comprise Deputy Superintendents of Police (Dy.SP) Benny K.V., Pradeep Kumar S.M. and Biju N., and Inspectors Binoj S., Biju Lal K., Manoj Kumar T.D., Sharon C.S., and Krishnan Potty K.G.

The SIT will be assisted by Ankit Asokan, Superintendent of Polce, Cyber Operations, for cyber-related matters. Besides, the ADGP, Crime Branch, has been authorised to co-opt other officers or personnel to the SIT, if found necessary.

As part of commencing the inquiry, the State Police Chief has handed over a copy of the Enforcement Directorate (ED)’s communication, which reportedly contains serious allegations, including references to alleged hawala transactions.

The SIT is expected to approach the Central agency for additional information and documents related to the case. The investigators face the challenge of independently verifying the material provided by the ED and gathering corroborating evidence.

The team will likely determine the next course of action after examining the documents, financial records and statement available to it. It has reportedly been tasked with submitting a preliminary report within a month.
