Several low-lying areas in Eluru and other mandals were inundated following incessant rain over the past 24 hours under the influence of Cyclone Murasu.
Trees were uprooted and knee-deep water accumulated on main roads as heavy rain lashed several parts of the district.
District Collector K. Vetri Selvi, who reviewed the situation with officials of the Revenue, Irrigation, Panchayat Raj, Police and other departments on Tuesday, directed them to monitor the situation continuously.
Rainfall was reported in Kalidindi, Eluru Urban, Denduluru, Nidamarru, Mandavalli, Mudinepalli and several other mandals, officials said.
Ms. Vetri Selvi directed the officers deployed for cyclone-related duties to shift people living in vulnerable areas and old houses to safer locations.
She asked headmasters to submit reports on the condition of school buildings and the power supply situation. They were also asked to check electrical cables immediately.
The Collector instructed Irrigation Department engineers to closely monitor water levels in the Kovvada, Tammileru, Jalleru and Yerrakaluva rivers in view of the heavy rainfall.
She urged people not to take shelter under trees or near electric poles and hoardings.
Fire, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams were carrying out rescue and relief operations in coordination with flood-duty personnel, officials said.
