Delhi building collapse LIVE: At least one dead, eight people rescued, says officials

The adjacent building to the collapse site has been vacated as a precautionary measure

Abuilding collapse was reported near Shiv Mandir at Satya Niketan in South West Delhi at 01:33 p.m on Sunday (September 6, 2026). According to the Delhi Fire Service, six people have been rescued so far, although the exact number of people feared to be trapped could not be ascertained.

The rescue operations are under way. JCBs have been called in to remove the debris.

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said that various agencies are carrying out rescue operations and assured immediate assistance to the affected families. The adjacent building to the collapse site has been vacated as a precautionary measure.

The formal function to mark the launch of the BJP’s new State headquarters in Goa was curtailed following the building collapse, even as Union Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurated the premises in the coastal State.

Krishna Bhardwaj, a first responder from Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh who was in Delhi campaigning for the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) elections, was among those who rushed to the site after the building collapsed. Delhi Fire Service confirms eight rescued from the collapse site. At least one person has died, according to the police.

“I was right there. I just sat on the scooter, and we were about to start. The building was right in front of my eyes. Deeply distressed by the collapse of a building at Satya Niketan in Delhi. Spoke with the Chief Minister, Commissioner of Police, Delhi, and the Director General, NDRF, and assessed the situation on the ground. The local administration and the NDRF are conducting intensive rescue operations in close coordination.

A “sudden tremor” sent residents of nearby buildings rushing out of their homes only to see the horror of a pile of rubble in place of the PG accommodation bustling with students in south-west Delhi’s Satya Niketan.

Many scrambled to remove the debris with bare hands and whatever tools they could get after the collapse of the five-storey building, Hostel Daze, in the congested colony lined with private student hostels, eateries and shops near the heart of Delhi University’s South Campus.

A local Rajen Chhetri, who works with the Delhi Police, said the building had around 15 rooms, with two to three students sharing each, and repair or construction work was underway in the basement.

Delhi CM Rekha Gupta has directed all officials to provide every possible assistance to the victims. She is in continuous contact with departmental officials, including the local District Magistrate, Delhi Police, and the NDRF. Shrimansi Kaushik

From the local enquiry it came to knowledge that this was 40–50-year-old building, comprising of a basement and five upper floors, and it was used as a PG accommodation . Repair work was underway in the basement when the incident occurred.
