England's Langton feared for gymnastics future after fall

England's Gabriel Langton says he feared for his future in gymnastics after his horror fall at the Commonwealth Games.

England's Gabriel Langton said he feared for his future in gymnastics after his horror fall at the Commonwealth Games, but will "definitely be back to it" soon.

The 19-year-old spent 20 hours in a neck brace before being discharged from hospital, having fallen from three metres directly on to his head in Friday's competition.

Langton said it was a move on the high bars he had competed "1,000 times and it is once that has happened".

He said he initially felt frustrated and embarrassed before coming to realise the severity of the situation.

"I knew I could speak and move my fingers and toes so my main thing was 'hopefully I can do gymnastics again'," Langton told the BBC.

"That question was in my head for the 20 hours until I got the MRI scan results. That was eating away at me."

Langton's scans showed swelling and bruising, results which meant he was allowed to leave hospital on Saturday night.

"A little bit sore and a little bit stiff but that is to be expected," he said of his condition.

"I can't really complain too much."

Before his fall, Langton was attempting to move into a handstand position on the high bar but lost his grip and fell head first on to the mat.

There was a lengthy delay to the competition before Langton was taken away on a trolley and then a stretcher.

"Once I went up and both hands have left the bar that is not the best," he said.

"From that moment, I knew 'oh this isn't going to be comfortable'."

The England team went on to secure a silver medal behind Canada in the competition.

The teenager did not receive his medal until he returned to the team hotel on Saturday evening, with the other members of the team gathering to applaud him.

"That was incredible," he said.

"Seeing all of the team-mates, coaches and getting my medal. I saw my personal coach from Birmingham. It was so nice."

With no further competition of his own, Langton was back in the arena on Sunday to support team-mates in the men's all-around final.

He said he will "take it easy for a couple of days and do the rehab" before returning to training in the near future.

"I trust in my gymnastics capability," he said.

"It was really just a freak accident."
