Five undertrials attack jail warder, booked for murder attempt

All are undertrial prisoners lodged in the Bengaluru Central Prison in connection with a 2025 Mangaluru murder case.

Five undertrial prisoners at the Parappana Agrahara Central Prison have been booked for allegedly assaulting a 32-year-old jail warder and attempting to strangle him following a dispute over prison security rules.

The accused have been identified as Mohammad Muzamil, Abdul Shafwan, Mohammad Rizwan, Niyaz, and Kalandar Shafi, all undertrial prisoners lodged in the Bengaluru Central Prison in connection with a 2025 Mangaluru murder case.

The complaint was filed by Manjunatha H.G., in-charge superintendent of the central prison, based on information provided by prison officials. The victim, Manjunath Haveli, is a jail warder who has been working at the prison since 2019.

According to the FIR, Haveli had gone to Annex-1 on September 2 to collect information regarding an inmate whose case was to be considered at a meeting of the Life Convict Review Committee.

Around 10.45 a.m., Muzamil allegedly confronted him over an earlier incident on August 22, when Haveli had stopped additional items — brought during his transfer from the security section — from being taken inside the prison.

Since last year, the prison department has imposed several restrictions on the quantity of items that could be given to inmates from their family members.

The FIR alleges that Muzamil hurled abuses at the warder, threatened to kill him, and punched him forcefully in the face and nose, causing bleeding injuries. The other four undertrials allegedly joined him in assaulting Haveli and dragged him into another room.

The five prisoners then allegedly continued attacking the warder and attempted to strangle him. The other prison staff who were present at the spot noticed the attack, intervened, and rescued Haveli, according to the FIR.

Based on a complaint, the Parappana Agrahara police have registered a case under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, including attempt to murder.
