The Keralam government will ensure that the lives of the fishing community in Vizhinjam improve along with the development of the international port, Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan has said. He was speaking after inaugurating the work on the new fishing harbour at Vizhinjam here on Friday.
Mr. Satheesan said that a total of ₹510 crore will be spent for the fishing community as part of various projects, with ₹260 crore allocated for the new fishing harbour, ₹90 crore for the renovation of the old fishing harbour, ₹125 crore for the construction of groynes (pulimuttu) at the new harbour and ₹35 crore as compensation for kerosene for fishers who had to take a longer route during the construction of groynes for the port.
“The construction of the fishing harbour will be completed in a timebound manner. It will have all the modern facilities required for fisherfolk. The government will also help the fishing community to market the catch. Vizhinjam belongs to the fishing community also. Their interests will be protected along with the development of the port,” said Mr. Satheesan. He said that the government will create academic programmes for youth from the coastal regions to secure jobs in port-related infrastructure.
