Aishani Khanna, 29, is recovering from seven deep cuts on her left ankle after she fell off a two-wheeler on the notorious Varthur stretch. The incident occurred on August 20.
While heading to work around noon, Ms. Khanna, a private firm employee, took a detour through Varthur for a personal errand. The stretch was dotted with potholes. Due to incessant rain, the potholes were submerged in rainwater.
Ms. Khanna rode the two-wheeler right into a pothole that remained hidden in the rainwater. She was thrown off the vehicle which fell on her ankle.
“I could not get up after the fall. I tried to use my right leg to move the scooter away but could not do so until an autorickshaw driver stopped to offer help. Passersby also came to my rescue and lifted the scooter. When I first saw my foot, it was covered in blood,” Ms. Khanna described.
The incident left her hospitalised for five days and with a bill of nearly ₹2 lakh.
“Doctors initially had to clean the wounds before assessing the extent of the injury. I underwent plastic surgery as the cuts were deep and covered with dirt,” she told The Hindu, adding that she subsequently underwent surgical debridement to remove damaged tissue and clean the wounds.
Ms. Khanna has since returned to Lucknow, her hometown, where she is undergoing dressing on alternate days. She said she has been told that it would at least take 45 days before she can start walking. “A second surgery may also be required, which could add another 15 days,” she added.
Ms. Khanna, who has been living in Bengaluru for the last 26 years, and in Varthur for the last five years, said that every season, flooding and potholes are common problems that never find a permanent solution.
“Every time the government gives some attention, but nothing is done. There’s never been any permanent work on that stretch,” she said, pointing to the development around Varthur, where large real-estate projects continue to come up even as residents deal with poor roads.
Acknowledging the situation, Additional Commissioner, east corporation, Snehal Sudhakar Lokhande, said that the corporation is aware of the poor stretches and is trying to address the issue, including long-term measures.
