The Bengaluru police have arrested a 64-year-old man for allegedly stealing empty LPG cylinders from a gas agency at Indiranagar, and selling them to another agency in Tamil Nadu.
The accused has been identified as Jayashilan (64), a resident of Kasturinagar. Police recovered 65 empty LPG cylinders worth ₹4.41 lakh, ₹2.49 lakh in cash, and a vehicle allegedly used to transport the stolen cylinders.
According to the police, Jayashilan was working as a delivery man at an LPG agency in Indiranagar. On the night of August 13, 173 empty domestic LPG cylinders were loaded on a goods vehicle at the agency’s depot, and the vehicle was locked. The next morning, the lock was found broken and 74 cylinders were missing. Based on a complaint filed on August 14, the Indiranagar police registered a case and launched an investigation.
During the investigation, the police detained the accused near Hosa Road in Parappana Agrahara on September 11. During questioning, he allegedly confessed to stealing the cylinders and selling them to a gas agency in Krishnagiri, Tamil Nadu. Police traced the vehicle allegedly used in the crime to a vacant site at Vinayakanagar, Begur.
Between September 12 and 17, the police recovered the 65 cylinders, the goods vehicle, and ₹2.49 lakh in cash. The arrest also helped police solve seven cylinder theft cases — three in Indiranagar, and one each in Halasuru, J.P. Nagar, Bagalur in Bengaluru, and Padalam police station limits in Tamil Nadu, officials said.
