Ranveer Singh’s next big-screen project is officially underway. Pralay has gone on floors in Mumbai, beginning production on a large-scale survival thriller that places Singh at the centre of a world facing an end-of-the-world catastrophe. The film is directed by Jai Mehta and backed by Birla Studios, True Story Films and Maa Kasam Films.

The project has been described as a post-apocalyptic zombie thriller, with Mehta developing the original screenplay alongside writer Vishal Kapoor. Earlier reports had placed the film in a dystopian Mumbai devastated by a zombie outbreak, although the makers have yet to release a detailed official plot synopsis. Hansal Mehta, who produces through True Story Films, has previously said that Singh himself approached Jai Mehta after being impressed by his work.

Jai Mehta has built his reputation through projects including Scam 1992: The Harshad Mehta Story, which he co-directed with his father Hansal Mehta, and Lootere. Pralay represents a major expansion in scale for the filmmaker, with the production described as a technically intensive project that spent several months in pre-production. The film is being shot at live locations across Mumbai.

Singh is joined by Malayalam actor Kalyani Priyadarshan, who has been cast in a pivotal role. The film marks one of Singh’s first major projects following the Dhurandhar films and gives the actor another physically demanding role after his recent run of large-scale action cinema.

The film has reportedly been mounted on a substantial budget, with earlier reports putting the figure around ₹300 crore, although that number has not been officially confirmed by the producers. The project has also undergone extensive technical preparation, with reports previously indicating plans for international shooting before production shifted toward Mumbai.

For Birla Studios, Pralay represents an early major feature production under Ananya Birla’s banner. True Story Films, led by Hansal Mehta and Sahil Saigal, is also producing alongside Singh’s Maa Kasam Films. Singh is additionally credited as a producer on the project.

The film’s release date has yet to be announced.
