Suriya has proved be ‘The One’ for Tamil cinema in 2026.
Post the success of Karuppu and Vishwanath and Sons arrives Scene, directed by Malayalam filmmaker Jithu Madhavan and taking on the Ramayanastorm in the South.
The release of Scene for Deepavali is significant not just for fans of the actor, but for followers of Tamil cinema as well. For, it comes a few days after the Tamil Nadu government announced that theatres across the State could now screen newly-released Tamil films for up to six shows a day, from 6 a.m. to 2.30 a.m. the following day, for one week from the date of release. This is the news cinema fans who know the allure of the early-morning shows had been waiting for, and this is exactly why the 6AM shows across Chennai opened to packed houses on Friday.
We caught one such show. Here are some of the highlights of Scene, especially with respect to earlier films of Suriya:
The leading lady of Scene is Nazriya, who is making a comeback to Tamil cinema after a long time. She is named Maya in the film – a name fans will remember quite fondly, as it was the name Jyotika had in the popular Kaakha Kaakha (2003). While that Maya is known as one of well-written characters in Tamil cinema, this Maya – played by Nazriya – also has a lot to do in Scene. That’s not all: Jyotika, who has also produced Scene, makes a brief appearance in a pivotal scene in the film, which had the theatre in raptures. Fans still gushing over the recent Suriya-Jyotika 20-year anniversary celebration are likely to be thrilled.
Nazriya in ‘Scene’, starring Suriya
No, actor Asin is not in Scene, but one particular sequence instantly reminds you of the star, Suriya’s leading lady in one of his landmark films, Ghajini. Scene features Nazriya guiding a visually impaired person, something that took us back to the Ghajini sequence of Asin helping someone navigate through traffic while describing to him the sights and sounds of the city. Something more obvious is a reference to the Singam series; Suriya literally repeats a popular dialogue from that film here, to comical effect.
Surprise appearances by actors is in vogue. If you watched Rajinikanth’s Jailer 2, you would have seen a host of leading stars, including the likes of Hrithik Roshan, appearing on the big screen, something that the makers largely kept a surprise for fans. In Scene too, there is one such interesting character – played by a leading Malayalam star. Watch out for those scenes.
