State directs BCC to pass resolution in favour of Mahajan Commission: Kannada organisations

The State government has directed the Belagavi City Corporation (BCC) to pass a resolution in favour of the Mahajan Commission recommendations that Belagavi is an integral part of Karnataka, Kannada organisations said in Belagavi on Tuesday.

“We had complained to the State government against the BCC for delaying the resolution. The BCC referred the matter to the State government. Now, the State government has given clear directions to the BCC to pass the resolution and send it copies of the proceedings. The government has also reprimanded the BCC Commissioner for sending such references and has asked him not to send any such references in future. We hold Mayor Preeti Kamkar and Deputy Mayor Hanumant Kongali responsible for this. We demand action against these elected representatives,’’ Ashok Chandaragi, convener of the central committee for Kannada organisations, told reporters.

“We have been fighting for this for four months now, and we have got our first victory. We first raised this demand in March. However, this issue was not discussed in the municipal council meetings held in March and April,” he said.

Mr. Chandaragi added, “Mayor Preeti Kamkar had passed a resolution seeking the opinion of the government, stating that they need the State government’s directions as the matter was before the Supreme Court. Now that the government has considered our demand, it has sent a copy of the resolution passed by the legislature during the then Chief Minister Ramakrishna Hegde’s tenure. This was moved by legislator H.K. Patil.”

“On March 23, 1988, the State legislature passed a resolution that it was imperative to implement the Mahajan Commission report in its totality to resolve the Karnataka-Maharashtra border dispute. The BCC should pass this resolution. We also demand that the Centre implement the Mahajan Commission report,’’ he said.

Kannada activists Mahadev Talawar, Balaram Masenatti and others were present.
