TNPCB asks public to opt for eco-friendly Vinayagar idols

The Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) has urged the public to celebrate Vinayagar Chathurthi in an eco-friendly manner and immerse idols only at locations notified by the respective district administrations.
The guidelines issued ahead of the festival stipulate that only idols made of natural, biodegradable and eco-friendly materials such as traditional clay and mud should be used. Idols made of Plaster of Paris (PoP), plastic and thermocol (polystyrene) are not permitted for immersion in water bodies.
The TNPCB has also advised against the use of toxic and non-biodegradable chemical dyes and oil paints. Eco-friendly, water-based, biodegradable and non-toxic natural dyes have been recommended instead. Decorative materials made of dried flowers, straw and other natural materials may be used.
The use of single-use plastic and thermocol for idols, decorations, pandals and pooja materials has been strictly discouraged. The Board has advised organisers to use biodegradable or reusable plates and glasses for prasadam distribution and to segregate and dispose of waste responsibly.
For beautification of idols, the TNPCB has recommended washable and removable decorative clothes made from natural materials and natural dyes instead of disposable materials containing paints and toxic chemicals.
The Board has reiterated that idol immersion should be carried out only at locations notified by the district administration and in accordance with the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) guidelines. The CPCB guidelines are available on the TNPCB website.
The public has also been advised to opt for LED lighting, avoid filament bulbs and single-use decorative items, and store and reuse decorations wherever possible.
