The Department of Health and Family Welfare has assigned a total of 927 MBBS graduates, who studied under the government quota in government and private medical colleges in the State and completed their internships, to compulsory government medical service for one year.

However, it exempted around 3,210 medical graduates from compulsory service due to the non-availability of vacancies at government hospitals and health centres in the State.

These are the students who opted for medical courses under the government quota at private colleges and also at government medical colleges in the years 2019-20 and 2020-21, and who completed their internship in 2026.

“Earlier, as the number of medical seats was fewer, the number of graduates passing out was also few. Now, the situation has changed. We have more graduates than the vacancies available to accommodate under compulsory rural service,” said an official of the department.

The compulsory service lasts for one year. If any candidate quits in the middle of the service, they will be penalised. If a candidate is absent from service for 30 days, there will be no option to rejoin; instead, they must pay a penalty of approximately ₹15 lakh.

Doctors must register on the Mobile Based Real Time Attendance System (KAMS) from the date of reporting. Completion certificates will only be issued after fulfilling this requirement and successfully completing the one-year term.

However, graduates who are obligated to compulsory government medical service are not allowed to attend medico-legal cases.
