Chicken shops in Bengaluru to shut over waste disposal fee

Chicken shops across Bengaluru, associated with the Karnataka Poultry Traders Association (KPTA), will shut down for two days starting September 3, to protest against the ₹5-per-kg service fee that Bengaluru Solid Waste Management Ltd. (BSWML) is set to charge for collecting poultry waste generated by meat shops.

The association has demanded that a minimum support price be fixed for poultry waste, arguing that the waste has ‘commercial value’ and is used by private companies to manufacture by-products and animal feed, which are then sold for profit.

“Waste such as intestines, feathers, skin, and bones is taken by private companies, which process it into powder and use it to make products such as dog and cat food. They earn from these products. At present, middlemen collect the waste from us and earn from it, while the companies also make a profit from the final product using our raw material,” the association said.

The association argued that instead of charging shops ₹5 per kg for the waste, private companies should purchase it from them at a minimum support price. On an average, each chicken shop generates around 32 kg to 35 kg of such waste, the association said.

It also pointed to a tender notification issued by the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA), which states that an authorised service provider has been appointed by BSWML for the scientific collection, transportation and processing of poultry, fish, pig, and other animal waste, including animal bones, generated within the GBA limits.

The notification states that all meat, poultry, fish, pork shops, and other establishments generating animal waste will have to mandatorily pay a service fee of ₹5 per kg for animal waste and ₹3 per kg for animal bone waste to the authorised service providers. It also requires establishments to hand over the waste only to service providers officially appointed by BSWML.

The association, however, said the fee would add to the costs of chicken shops. It said that if the government does not consider its demand for a minimum support price, shopkeepers would be forced to increase the price of chicken to recover the additional cost.
