The Delhi High Court on Thursday (October 29, 2026) directed former India cricket captain Sourav Ganguly to identify the specific scenes and dialogues in the film Doosra that he claims infringe his personality rights.
Justice Tejas Karia asked the filmmakers to submit a pen drive containing the movie, described as a fictional story about a middle-class girl from Rajasthan, inspired by sporting events involving Mr. Ganguly. The court listed the former cricketer’s suit against the film’s makers for November 2.
“Prepare a table with a timestamp of the objectionable scene and narration of the objections... We will see it over the weekend and we will hear you,” the court said.
Luv Films LLP, which is producing a biopic on Mr. Ganguly, has also joined the lawsuit, alleging that Doosra violates its contractual rights.
The court directed the plaintiffs to submit the manuscript of their upcoming film, titled ‘Dada’, in a sealed envelope and explain how the defendants’ movie allegedly infringes their contractual rights.
The counsel representing Mr. Ganguly argued that ‘Doosra’ had already hit theatres last week but was yet to be released on OTT platforms. “It is all about Sourav Ganguly’s life. His image has been badly exploited without consent... After intermission, it is all about the (2002) NatWest match,” the counsel submitted.
The counsel representing the filmmakers of ‘Doosra’ told the court that they had obtained the required permissions from the authorities holding the copyright to the sporting-event footage. Opposing Mr. Ganguly’s plea, the defendants maintained that the cricketer was merely a source of inspiration for the film.
On October 23, the High Court had sought a response from the makers of Doosra to Mr. Ganguly’s allegations of personality rights infringement and directed them to arrange a screening of the film.
A day earlier, on October 22, the court had declined to restrain the film’s theatrical release.
Doosra: India’s Other Freedom Struggle is a sports drama directed by Abhinay Deo and features Plabita Borthakur, Ankur Vikal and Samidha Guru.
