With Gowri Ganesha festival approaching close, many small and large groups of people in various locations across the city are already setting up pandals to install Ganesha idols and celebrate with pomp and grandeur.
At the same time, officials of Bangalore Electricity Supply Company Limited (Bescom) have warned organisers against procuring illegal electricity connections to these pandals which is unsafe and poses serious risk to lives. They have stated that procuring a No Objection Certificate (NOC) is a must for the organisers.
Speaking to The Hindu, a senior official from the Bescom, said, “In order to seek a temporary electricity connection, there is a single window currently open with the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) under which the organiser has to apply and get an NOC. The NOC has to be produced in the respective sub-division office of the Bescom, along with the passport photos of the organiser, Aadhaar Card and a festival pamplet.”

When asked about the cases of power theft in the pandals, the official said, “Our vigilance officers will be present and in such cases, penalty will be imposed. More importantly, it is risky to put a hook and draw power from the nearest point as it endangers people’s lives. Organisers have to ensure that lighting systems are adequately insulated and are not in contact with electricity poles. The samiyanas or pandals should not be close to the electric wires, poles or even transformer stations.”
The official further stated that people must be mindful of overhead power lines during procession.
“Notify sub-divisional officers of the procession route in advance so they can provide assistance. Report live wire or electrical spark by calling 1912 helpline and mark ‘Danger Zone’ where electrical equipment is set up for the Ganesha pandal installation,” the official said.
