KBN University holds Foldscope workshop for students
The Departments of Zoology and Botany, Faculty of Science, Khaja Bandanawaz University (KBN University), organised a workshop on ‘Foldscope: An affordable tool for exploring the microscopic world’ on the university campus on Wednesday.

The Departments of Zoology and Botany, Faculty of Science, Khaja Bandanawaz University (KBN University), organised a workshop on “Foldscope: An Affordable Tool for Exploring the Microscopic World” on the university campus on Wednesday.
The workshop aimed to introduce students to Foldscope, an affordable and portable microscope, and provide them with hands-on experience in assembling, handling and using the device for microscopic observations.
KBN University Pro-Vice-Chancellor Syed Ashfaq Ahmed, addressing the gathering, highlighted the importance of encouraging scientific curiosity among students through exploration of the microscopic world and practical learning. He appreciated the initiative to introduce students to an affordable microscopy tool.
Sudarshan, the chief guest and resource person, delivered a special lecture on Foldscope, explaining its principles, applications and significance in exploring the microscopic world. Syed Abrar, assistant professor in the Department of Botany, chaired the session.
The lecture was followed by practical training, during which Dr. Sudarshan demonstrated the assembly and handling of the Foldscope and explained how microscopic observations could be carried out using the device. Students actively participated in the hands-on session and gained direct experience in using the microscope.
The workshop helped students connect theoretical concepts with practical scientific observation and familiarised them with the possibilities of affordable microscopy technology in the biological sciences.
Around 105 students, teaching staff, organisers and others participated in the workshop. The key learning areas included understanding the concept and working principle of Foldscope, learning its assembly and handling, gaining practical experience in microscopic observation, and exploring the potential of affordable microscopy technology in biological studies.
