Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Friday (November 6, 2026) termed the Supreme Court’s decision directing Punjab and Haryana to supply 11,973 million units of electricity to the State over 20 years towards its outstanding dues from the Bhakra-Nangal and Beas hydroelectric projects a historic victory for its people.

The order settles a decades-old dispute over Himachal Pradesh’s 7.19% share in the power generated from the projects. The State will receive nearly 60 crore units annually during the lean season, generating an estimated revenue of ₹10,000 crore to ₹20,000 crore over the 20-year period, depending on electricity prices, Mr. Sukhu said in a statement.

He said the decision could fetch the State additional revenue of up to ₹1,000 crore annually. Even at ₹6 per unit, Himachal Pradesh would earn at least ₹500 crore a year, while a rate of ₹13-14 per unit would significantly increase the returns.

Mr. Sukhu attributed the outcome to the State government’s sustained legal battle and determination to secure its financial rights. He described it as the fourth major success in protecting Himachal Pradesh’s interests, citing earlier victories in matters relating to Wildflower Hall, the Kishau Dam among others.

The Chief Minister said the government was also pursuing its claims over the Shanan Power Project and the water cess.

The additional revenue, he said, would be used to strengthen education and healthcare, improve road infrastructure, generate employment and ensure timely payment of financial benefits to government employees.

Congratulating the State’s nearly 75 lakh residents, Mr. Sukhu said protecting its resources and making Himachal Pradesh self-reliant remained a top priority for his government.
