One-time supplementary exams to be completed in Calicut University in six months

The authorities at the University of Calicut have formulated a plan to complete pending one-time regular supplementary examinations, dating back to the 1995 batch, in six months.

Pro Vice-Chancellor P. Rasheed Ahammed recently submitted a report to Vice-Chancellor P. Raveendran with details of a temporary schedule and the steps to be taken from September 23 for the purpose. At present, the examinations for approximately 40 different course groups remain to be completed.

According to sources, the students who have only one or two papers left to complete in various courses are awaiting these examinations. The authorities have been finding it difficult to get teachers to prepare question papers and old syllabi were not available too. Because of these challenges, special supplementary examinations could not be held within a time-frame for students who were unable to complete their studies.

In this context, Mr. Raveendran directed Mr. Ahammed to implement a new system after the Controller of Examinations reported that completing the examination process within six months under the current system was not feasible.

Although the Syndicate meeting held on July 29 had decided to utilise the services of retired officials, the move was put on hold following opposition from the university’s staff organisations. Subsequently, Mr. Ahammed prepared a master plan to complete the examinations by making use of the university’s existing staff. The V-C also gave an assurance at the Syndicate meeting held on September 19 that the supplementary examinations would be completed in six months.

Official sources said on Monday (September 21, 2026) that the staff strength in the supplementary examination section would be increased to expedite the completion of the exams. A special section would be established to locate and digitise the old syllabi. To address the shortage of examination halls, the possibility of using the university auditorium as an examination centre would be examined.

A digital repository would be created under the supervision of the university librarian to securely store both old and new question papers and syllabi. The sources said that a meeting of the Chairpersons of the Boards of Studies would be convened for courses whose syllabus was unavailable. An appropriate equivalent syllabus would be determined and the subsequent course of action would be decided, they added.
