Chairman and Managing Director of the Singareni Collieries Company Ltd (SCCL) Dr. Buddhaprakash Jyoti on Tuesday met District Collector of Angul (Odisha) Mohammad Abdaal Akhtar to discuss land allocation and other support required for the company’s proposed projects in Odisha.

The plans include establishment of a thermal power plant near the Naini coal mine, an R&R colony for project-affected families and roads for coal transportation. The Collector responded positively to the proposals and assured necessary support.

Issues such as land acquisition, approvals and other requirements for the proposed works were discussed at the meeting also attended by Singareni Directors Gowtam Potru and L.V. Suryanarayana, Executive Director (Coal Movement) B. Venkanna, General Manager (Coordination) T. Srinivas, Naini General Manager Debdulal Baidya and others

.The Singareni CMD requested the Collector to allot suitable land for an R&R colony for the 40 families displaced by the Naini coal mine. He also sought an early meeting of the Rehabilitation and Periphery Advisory Committee (RPDAC) to take decisions on implementing the R&R package, acquiring land for the colony and addressing other rehabilitation-related matters.

On the Singareni’s plan for setting up a thermal power plant near the Naini coal mine, the company identified land in Tukuda and Jarapada villages as suitable for the project and requested the Collector’s support in acquiring it. On the road for coal transportation, the CMD stated that Singareni had already deposited ₹35 crore towards the proposed bypass road between Chandipara and Jarapada villages, which will connect coal from the Naini block to the nearby Jarapada railway junction.

The CMD requested the departments concerned to support completion of the road, which could serve as a coal corridor for other coal-producing industries as well. Further, he sought suitable land for a Singareni office and staff colony in Odisha as the company was expanding its operations there.

He requested support for constructing the Majhika bypass road to transport coal without causing inconvenience to local residents, assuring that it would provide funds required for land acquisition for the road. The District Collector assured the company of all necessary cooperation, stating that they would support Singareni’s efforts to meet the country’s power requirements.

Visit to gasification plant

The Singareni team later visited Jindal’s coal gasification plant in Angul district, the first coal gasification plant in the country. They learned about the process of producing gas from domestic coal and its use by Jindal Steel.

The team also discussed with experts the prospects and feasibility of coal gasification using coal from Singareni’s closed underground mines, as well as incentives offered by the Central Government. Singareni coal from the Naini mine is also transported to the Jindal plant.
