Crunchyroll and Sony Pictures Entertainment will distribute The Apothecary Diaries: The Late Lady’s Treasure in theatres across North America and international markets, including India, following its Japanese premiere in December.

Crunchyroll has acquired the North American and worldwide distribution rights, excluding Asia but including India, to The Apothecary Diaries: The Late Lady’s Treasure, the first feature film in the popular anime franchise. The film will be distributed theatrically by Crunchyroll and Sony Pictures Entertainment, with international release dates and ticketing details to be announced later. The film is scheduled to open in Japan on December 11, 2026.

The upcoming film presents an original mystery based on a story concept by Natsu Hyuuga, the creator of the original The Apothecary Diaries light novel series. Directed by Norihiro Naganuma and animated by TOHO Animation Studio, the feature follows Maomao and Jinshi as they investigate a mystery involving the remains of a deceased imperial concubine and a hidden treasure.

The story begins when the emperor orders Jinshi to fulfil the final wish of a concubine who died five years earlier by returning her remains to her homeland. However, an examination reveals that the remains are remarkably well-preserved. Jinshi brings Maomao along to Binan-shu, a southern province ruled by the Bi clan, where their investigation leads them to a bustling waterside city. As Maomao explores unfamiliar herbs and medicines, the pair discover that pirates are searching for a treasure concealed by their former leader. Events take an unexpected turn when a major incident occurs on the day of the concubine’s funeral.

The film expands the franchise beyond its television series, which follows Maomao, a young apothecary with extensive knowledge of medicines and poisons. After being kidnapped and sold into service at the emperor’s palace, she becomes involved in medical mysteries and political intrigues, drawing the attention of Jinshi, a palace official.
