‘The Further Mis-adventures of Cliff Booth’ trailer: Brad Pitt returns as Tarantino’s stuntman in David Fincher’s Hollywood crime story

Brad Pitt reprises his Oscar-winning role as Cliff Booth in David Fincher’s Quentin Tarantino-penned follow-up to ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’, set eight years after the events of the 2019 film

Netflix has released the first full trailer for The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth, bringing Brad Pitt back as the stuntman and fixer he played in Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Directed by David Fincher from a screenplay by Tarantino, the film moves the story to 1977 Los Angeles, where Cliff has left his days as a Hollywood stuntman and body double behind and taken on a new line of work as a studio fixer. The film will open exclusively in IMAX on November 25 before arriving on Netflix on December 23.

The trailer establishes a very different chapter for Cliff, who is now working jobs that require him to use the particular set of skills he developed during his years in Hollywood. He is introduced dealing with the aftermath of a chaotic incident at the Beverly Cinema before becoming involved with television star Charlie Peters, played by Scott Caan. Elizabeth Debicki plays Peters’ talent agent Karen Crosby, who brings Cliff into the situation, while Carla Gugino plays Peters’ wife Toni. Yahya Abdul-Mateen II appears as Roderick “Hot Rod” Harrison, a former professional football player who has become a screen star.

The story unfolds eight years after Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, which followed Cliff and actor Rick Dalton during an alternate-history version of 1969 Los Angeles. Leonardo DiCaprio does not return as Dalton, although Timothy Olyphant reprises his role as actor James Stacy. The new film introduces a separate collection of Hollywood personalities and criminals, including the Verdusco brothers, played by Matt Groove and JB Tadena. Peter Weller, Holt McCallany, Corey Fogelmanis and Karren Karagulian are also part of the ensemble.

The trailer also plays with Cliff’s history from Tarantino’s original film. Karen asks him about his work with Dalton, prompting Cliff to offer his characteristically blunt explanation for why their professional relationship ended. The footage otherwise leans into the new film’s crime-story setup, with murder, blackmail, theft, extortion, car chases and Hollywood personalities becoming entangled in Cliff’s latest job. Netflix describes the story as a collision of “violence, ambition, and desire” in 1977 Los Angeles.

Fincher directs from Tarantino’s screenplay, marking an unusual handover between two major American filmmakers. Tarantino originally developed the project himself before choosing Fincher to direct. Fincher reunites with several of his regular collaborators, including cinematographer Erik Messerschmidt, production designer Donald Graham Burt, editor Kirk Baxter and sound designer Ren Klyce. Pitt is also among the film’s producers alongside Tarantino, David Heyman, Ceán Chaffin and Stacey Sher.

The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth will receive a two-week IMAX run beginning November 25, making it the first Netflix film to receive a global IMAX theatrical release of this scale, before its worldwide Netflix debut on December 23.
