When a whale moves, the rest of the sea adjusts. After months of uncertainty, the makers of actor-turned-politician and Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu Vijay’s swansong film Jana Nayagan recently announced that the film will finally release in theatres on July 23. The news, which came a week after the film got its CBFC certification, has expectedly forced a slew of smaller Tamil films to reconsider or reschedule their releases.

Lokesh Kanagaraj-Arun Matheswaran’s DC moves to August 7

The upcoming film DC, which marks Vijay’s close friend and collaborator Lokesh Kanagaraj’s acting debut, was originally slated to release on July 31. However, since that will put DC’s release just a week closer to Jana Nayagan’s release on July 23, the former’s production banner, Sun Pictures, announced that the film has been pushed to August 7. Directed by Arun Matheswaran, the action drama also stars Wamiqa Gabbi and Sanjana Krishnamoorthy in pivotal roles.

GV Prakash makes way for his Thalapathy

Actor-composer GV Prakash Kumar’s upcoming film Immortal was originally slated to release on July 23. A few hours after the announcement of Jana Nayagan’s new release date, Prakash, an avid fan of Thalapathy Vijay, announced that the release of Immortal has been moved to September 4. “If Thalapathy comes, we have to make way, isn’t it?” read Prakash’s tweet.

Did Jana Nayagan’s release prompt G.D.N’s postponement?

Though the makers haven’t stated that Madhavan’s film was pushed from its July 17 release plans due to Jana Nayagan, netizens have been speculating that the Vijay-starrer certainly influenced the decision. G.D.N, directed by Krishnakumar Ramakumar, is a biopic of Indian inventor and engineer GD Naidu. The cast of the film also features Sathyaraj, Jayaram, Priyamani, Dushara Vijayan, Thambi Ramaiah, and Vinay Rai. A new release date is yet to be announced.

Will Sathyavan Savithri and Sigma also move?

Two other Tamil films are yet to decide on their release dates, though updates about their release plans can be expected in the upcoming days.

Sathyavan Savithri, starring Keerthy Suresh and Mysskin, is currently slated to release on July 24, a day after Vijay arrives in theatres for one last time. Meanwhile, the most expected announcement will be that of Sigma. Will the release of Vijay’s film force his son Jason Sanjay’s debut directorial to reconsider its release plans? Starring Sundeep Kishan, the film is slated to release on July 31 as of now.
