Nallur toll plaza on Kolkata National Highway to be moved to Durainallur

NHAI moves Nallur toll plaza 13 km to Durainallur to ease delays, improve traffic flow, and address surrounding road changes.

The National Highways Authority of India has planned to shift the toll plaza at Nallur on the Chennai - Kolkata National Highway. It will be moved to Durainallur, which is about 13 km from the present location. The plaza is notorious for long waits during rush hours.

Motorists fed up with waiting at the Nallur Plaza will get some relief from this move. “Residents of areas such as Karanodai, Janapanchathiram, Nallur and Periyapalayam will find it very convenient when the plaza is removed. There are several colleges in the area and the buses transporting students too wait in queue to cross the plaza on many occasions. Shifting of the plaza has been a long-time demand,” said K. Suresh Kumar, a resident.

Ramesh, another resident, suggested that the width of the road be narrowed at that location. “It is now wider than the road width, making it difficult to cross. It would be helpful if the road stretch is normalised and shops regularised,” he said.

Sources in the NHAI said that the existing location was no longer viable as a number of new roads have been laid in the surroundings making it possible for road users to avoid the plaza. This will lead to loss of revenue. “The plaza is also located inside municipal limits, making it pertinent to shift it outside. The contract of the current agency managing the plaza will get over by May next year. We hope to get the design ready for the new plaza by then,” explained a source.

Around 50,000 passenger car units use that road on a daily basis. The plaza is also likely to be a multi-lane free flow tolling system without toll booths and operators.
