Veteran Tamil scholar, celebrated orator, and cultural icon Solomon Pappaiah passed away at the age of 90 on Friday (September 11, 2026), following an age-related illness, while receiving treatment at a private hospital in Madurai. Prof. Pappaiah leaves behind a rich legacy that touched the hearts of millions of Tamil speakers around the world.

Prof. Pappaiah had a deep and lasting connection with The American College in Madurai. He served the institution with distinction from 1961 to 1994, heading its Department of Tamil.

Contribution to Tamil studies

Under his leadership, Tamil studies flourished at the college. A major milestone during his tenure was the successful upgrading of the Undergraduate Tamil programme into a full-fledged Postgraduate Department in 1986. Colleagues and former students remember him not just as an educator, but as a dedicated mentor who shaped generations of young minds.

Beyond his academic contributions, Prof. Pappaiah became a household name through his inimitable oratory skills and his mastery of the Pattimandram (Tamil debate).

He possessed a rare gift: the ability to explain complex literary, philosophical, and social ideas in simple, engaging language that ordinary people could easily understand and enjoy. Through television and public stages, he brought the beauty and depth of the Tamil language into living rooms across the globe.

In recognition of his immense service to literature and education, the Government of India honoured him with the prestigious Padma Shri award in 2021.
