Netflix has announced a live-action spin-off of its hit series Stranger Things, titled Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure. The series is being developed by the Duffer Brothers and longtime Stranger Things writer Kate Trefry. It is scheduled to premiere in 2028.
Set in the 1950s, the prequel is set to explore a new chapter in the Stranger Things universe, decades before the events of the original series. The original follows a group of youngsters in the fictional town of Hawkins, Indiana, as they encounter supernatural forces. The new series is also set before the events of the stage play Stranger Things: The First Shadow, which explores Henry Creel’s past in Hawkins in 1959.
The Duffer Brothers had been developing the idea for Other Worlds for several years. The duo described it as a fresh take on the franchise, adding that the series would feature a new setting, characters, and antagonists.
Kate Trefry, who also wrote The First Shadow, is the showrunner, co-creator, and writer. She will executive produce the series alongside BAFTA and Golden Globe-winning filmmaker Joe Wright, who will also direct the first three episodes.
Trefry said she was excited to return to the world of Stranger Things with a new story while retaining the horror, mystery, and wonder associated with the original series. The production of the series will take place in New Mexico.
Matt and Ross Duffer through their production banner Upside Down Pictures, Shawn Levy and his banner 21 Laps, Paul Dichter, Shelley Meals, Andrea Sperling and Pavlina Hatoupis are the other executive producers.

Levy said the new series would retain the essence of the original while introducing a different era, setting, characters, and mythology. Netflix’s head of scripted series in the US and Canada, Jinny Howe, also welcomed the collaboration, describing the project as a new dimension of the Stranger Things universe.
Since its debut in 2016, Stranger Things has emerged as one of Netflix’s most successful shows, with its first four seasons garnering more than 1.2 billion views. Seasons 4 and 5 are also among the streaming platform’s most popular television seasons.
