‘Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest’ gets theatrical release after 2027, will bring Westeros to the big screen

The ‘Game of Thrones’ universe is finally heading to cinemas, with ‘Aegon’s Conquest’ confirmed as a theatrical feature for a release after 2027, marking the franchise’s first planned big-screen movie

The first Game of Thrones feature film has received a significant release update, with Warner Bros. confirming that Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest will be part of its theatrical slate beyond 2027

The announcement comes through Warner Bros. Discovery’s second-quarter 2026 shareholders’ letter, which places the film among the studio’s post-2027 theatrical projects alongside new entries in The Matrix, Batman and The Jetsons. The studio has yet to announce a specific release date, meaning 2028 is currently the earliest possible window, with a 2029 release also looking plausible given the project’s current stage of development.

The film, currently titled Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest, will chronicle one of the most consequential chapters in Westerosi history: the conquest led by Aegon I Targaryen, who used his dragons and armies to bring six of the Seven Kingdoms under his rule. Dorne resisted the initial conquest and remained outside Aegon’s control. The events are detailed in George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, which serves as the historical source material for HBO’s House of the Dragon.

The project took an unusual route to the big screen. HBO and Warner Bros. had previously explored separate versions of an Aegon conquest story, with the television project reportedly being developed by The Batman Part II writer Mattson Tomlin. The theatrical version ultimately moved forward after Andor writer Beau Willimon developed a screenplay that convinced Warner Bros. the story could work as a feature film.

Warner Bros. formally revealed the movie during its CinemaCon presentation in April, where Aegon’s Conquest appeared on the studio’s “2027 and beyond” slate. The film therefore represents the franchise’s first confirmed theatrical feature after years of HBO expanding Westeros through television.

There is currently no director or cast attached, and the film remains in the early stages of development. Current reporting indicates that casting and location scouting have yet to begin, making an immediate production timeline unlikely.

The timing could also allow Warner Bros. to space out its expanding Westeros slate. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is expected to continue with its second season in 2027, while House of the Dragon is scheduled to conclude with its fourth season in 2028. A 2029 theatrical release for Aegon’s Conquest would therefore give the franchise another major Westeros event after those television chapters.

For a franchise built around dragons and dynastic warfare, the move to cinema feels like a particularly obvious escalation. Aegon’s Conquest would place Balerion the Black Dread, Aegon and his sisters Visenya and Rhaenys at the centre of a story that has been repeatedly referenced across the Game of Thrones universe without ever being fully dramatised.
